So our anniversary year was wonderful.  I enjoyed meeting so many alumni and getting back in touch with some of our more recent graduates.  We are lucky to have so many of you involved in the department, and I want to make sure to thank as many as I can.

50th Anniversary Geography Endowment Update

The Mary Washington Geography Department’s campaign to build an endowment to mark our 50th Anniversary just passed an important milestone!

Thanks to major gifts and pledges from Alyson Greiner (1998) and her husband Luis Montes; Dawn (1986) and Marshall Bowen; Ellen and Keith Littlefield (1979) and the generous donations of other alumni and faculty, we have now matched Jeff (1991) and Lisa Rountree’s initial gift of $20,000.

On Saturday, April 18, 135 geographers came together to celebrate 50 years of Geography at Mary Washington.

The Banquet, held at Brock’s Riverside Grill in Downtown
Fredericksburg, featured Marshall Bowen’s recollections on the
Department’s history, the presentation of awards and the Geography
Alumni Scholarship to current students, and the recognition of the
contributions to the department made by students, faculty, and alumni
over the years.

50th Anniversary Geography Endowment

As the Department of Geography looks forward to celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2009, a UMW geography alumnus has made a gift to establish an endowment to support student and program needs. The 50th Anniversary Geography Endowment will provide additonal resources to promote the mission of the Department by helping to fund student research-related travel, GIS and physical laboratories, local and international field courses, and other student-oriented projects.
